Hi there! My
name is Gary
Hondel! Thanks
for visiting my
website!
I was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on January 23rd, 1967 (just eight days
after the first Super Bowl was played!). Here's a few pictures of my home
state...
As a child, my favorite hobbies were drawing and reading the comics. It was
always my dream to become a cartoonist. My favorite cartoonist was Peanuts
creator, Charles Schulz (another Minnesota native). I always had a sketch
pad with me wherever I went. I tried several times to get my cartoons into
newspapers and magazines, but was unsuccessful.
Another interest I had while I was growing up was radio. I remember
spending hours and hours at the Minnesota State Fair just standing and
watching the announcers at my favorite Twin Cities radio station, WCCO, as
they did their shows live from a special broadcast booth while the fair was
going on. I was so impressed that I decided to enroll in broadcasting school.
All together, I've spent over ten years in the radio industry at stations in
Minnesota and Alaska.
Speaking of Alaska, I decided to move there in 1992, at the age of 25. A
friend of mine had already moved there the year before and I was looking for
a change myself. So, I packed everything I could fit into my 1985 Ford Escort
and made my way up the Alaska/Canadian Highway. While in Alaska, I
worked as a political cartoonist for the town newspaper. I even managed to
get a college degree! It's also where I met my wife, Sara. Then, not long after
our daughter, Anya, was born we moved to Florida and are still here today!
